It begins with, “The word is a symbol and a delight which sucks up men and scenes, trees, plants, factories, and Pekinese. This paragraph is full of profound language and imagery. One of these allegories is the entire second paragraph. I would recommend this book to anyone who hopes to gain insight from its complex characters and impactful allegories. It is a plot of plots, a story of stories, and a lesson of lessons. In this book, Steinbeck is capable of maintaining complexity and simplicity at the same time. Cannery Row is full of meaningful, poetic, and outright confusing anecdotes like this one. “What can it profit a man to gain the whole world and to come to his property with a gastric ulcer, a blown prostate, and bifocals?” (Steinbeck, 5). ![]()

At its best, it slips beneath the surface, nuanced enough to go unnoticed. Even the dialogue between characters is tense, often trading subtext for text. I kept re-reading descriptions, trying to understand the blocking. Goenawan is not shy about dropping what doesn’t contribute, but the result feels less like cutting the fat so much as letting the plot drive. Instead, the novel’s construction feels like an inflated form of the outline, rather than the most elegant communication of the story. While each section intermixed the character’s memories and current thoughts, I longed for the skill shown weaving Ryusei and Miwako’s voices in the opening. In this paper we apply network analysis to the study of literature. The opera uses choral glorification of these heroic parents to foster on a national scale the type of intimacy Tolstoy had advocated in the home. Moving away from Tolstoy’s family ideal in Peace, with its basis on intimate sibling bonds, Prokofiev shifted the family to War, turning it into a national Russian family of Father Kutuzov, Mother Russia and their children – the Russian people. ![]() This article explores how Prokofiev reworked Tolstoy’s philosophy of love and human connection to make his opera acceptable for the Soviet stage. ![]() Prokofiev’s early decision to split his opera into Peace and War, making the first a romantic love story of individuals and the second a collective story of the people’s love for Mother Russia, marked a major divergence from Tolstoy. When Sergei Prokofiev chose to adapt War and Peace for the Soviet opera stage in the 1940s, he faced both operatic conventions and Soviet ideological demands that ran counter to the philosophy and structure of Tolstoy’s sprawling masterpiece. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments While It Lasts by Abbi Glines![]() ![]() ![]() Eva is the one woman who seems immune to Cage's charms and that draws him to her like nothing else but Eva has had her heart broken before and the last thing she needs is another guy in her life, especially a player like Cage.
